Periodicals

Each of the following newspapers or magazines is helpful for expanding your knowledge about personal finance and managing money. I have arranged them in approximate order of difficulty. The magazines listed first typically assume very little knowledge about finance. The last couple are for those of you who decide to get really serious about the topic. I recommend starting with the ones near the top of the list and working your way down as your knowledge increases. You could also start with a single issue from a newsstand to get an idea.

Some of these periodicals offer a fair amount of free content on their web site. Others require a paid subscription to get to the bulk of their articles. Browse the web sites and then decide.

For your convenience, I have listed a link to purchase from Amazon, as well as the direct link to the periodical’s website. Be sure to check both places — I want you to get the best deal. If you are not a fan of printed materials, you could also consider subscribing online if the content is sufficiently valuable to you..

Money Magazine. This is a good place to start if you are new to managing your money.

Smart Money magazine. One of my favorite publications for many years. It’s a magazine for “grownups”, but doesn’t presuppose a deep background in personal finance. From the editors of The Wall Street Journal.

Fortune magazine. Tends to focus more on business, but has sections relevant to managing your money.

Bloomberg Businessweek magazine. Also oriented to business topics. For those interested in stocks and the world of business, this is a great periodical. Articles are well-written. The also tend to have pieces focused on individual investing and money management. Available for iPad.

The Wall Street Journal. One of America’s greatest newspapers. I can’t wait to read this every morning. If you are serious about finance and business, you simply must subscribe to the Journal. They have an iPad subscription as well.

The Economist. If you want a great international perspective of what’s going on, this is the magazine for you. Be warned, though, that this is for serious consumers of world and business news. This publication is the polar opposite of most mass-market periodicals. Well-written and intellectual. A Kindle subscription is also available.
